The Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) Loan is a repayable sum of money awarded to needy students in institutions of higher learning in Kenya to help fund their education. First Time Application is for applicants who are applying for the very first time.

How to Apply for HELB Loan Online as a First Time Applicant

This article focuses on the first time application procedure for students joining the university as KUCCPS-placed or self-sponsored.

Requirements

  • HELB Account
  • A copy of your:
    • National ID Card
    • parents’ National ID Cards/death certificate where the parent is deceased
    • guarantors’ National ID Cards (i.e. two (2) guarantors)
    • Admission Letter
    • KCSE Result Slip/Certificate
    • Bank/ATM Card (for Government sponsored students only)
    • recent Coloured Passport Size Photograph

Procedure

  1. Go to your browser, search HELB then click on the HELB Student Portal to open,
  2. enter your Email Address and Password then click Login to sign into your account.
  3. On the Loan Application page, select your Level of Study and Employment Status then click Search to get the loan application you qualify for.
  4. Click Open against any of the loan products displayed then click on your current year of study on the HELB Financial Literacy Campaign box that pops up.
  5. Click on Read Financial Literacy Material (HTML) to read the HELB financial literacy guide, close the message box then click on I’ve Reviewed the Materials. Let’s Begin Assessment.
  6. Complete the easy Financial Lieracy Assessment by choosing the correct answer under each question then click Submit Form. Did you pass? If yes continue by clicking Proceed to Loan Application, otherwise redo the assessment and pass.
  7. Fill all the sections of the Loan Application Form and submit.
  8. Print Two (2) copies of the duly filled Loan Application Form. Have the forms appropriately filled, signed, and stamped by the relevant authorities. Attach all the documents as per the checklist and present one (1) copy of the duly filled Loan Application Form at any Huduma Centers nearest to you or the HELB Student Service Centre at Anniversary Towers, Nairobi. Retain a complete copy of the Loan Application Form.

Note

  • Ensure that you read, understand, and follow the instructions provided at the beginning of the online loan application process including reading and undertaking the HELB Financial Literacy Programme.
  • It is recommended that you prudently manage your HELB loans once disbursed to cater for tuition, books, stationery, accommodation, and subsistence.
  • You are advised to apply for HELB Loan at least One (1) month before the opening date to allow time for processing and remittance.
