Consulting a pro, or in most instances an amateur, on how to start and run a particular trade of your interest is an obviously convenient thing to do. However, here are the reasons why you should not seek advice when looking to start your small business.
i) They don’t have the kind of vision your have
Most people will never get it no matter how simply you present your idea to them. It might not be their fault because some visions are beyond explanation. A person who hasn’t understood your case can never give you proper advice.
ii) They’ve never had a business of their own
Like a plague, avoid looking for guidance from people who have zero direct experience in any trade, let alone your trade of interest. A person who has never done something should never counsel you about it, ever.
iii) They’ve failed in their own business
Never seek direction from people who tried in business, failed and gave up. They often will feed you noise and sell you fear from their trauma. What kind of guidance can come from a loser who has failed and stayed defeated in business?
iv) They’ll feed you noise and sell you fear
Majority of the people are average. Majority of people are full of sh*t. A crappy person will give you a crappy advice: "I (or so and so, or many people have) tried that business and failed.", "You should close your shop and get a life.", etc.
v) They don’t give a f*ck
Everyone is interested in themselves and whatever is going on in their lives. No one cares about your little business ideas, no one but you. You’re better off executing without asking for advice from those who’ll see it as a bother.
If you want to kill a big dream, tell it to small-minded people. In the Book of Genesis 37:5, "Now Joseph had a dream, and he told it to his brothers; and they hated him even more." In the wise words of Mark Twain, keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great. When you are seeking to bring big plans to fruition, it is important with whom you regularly associate.
