As a Kenyan citizen, there are a few important documents that you MUST have e.g. a National Identification Card. There are also a few other necessary documents that you should have as a citizen e.g. Chapter Six (6) compliance and clearance certificates.

Important Documents To Have As A Kenyan Citizen

Some of the most important documents to have as a Kenyan citizen include:

a. Birth Certificate

A Birth Certificate is a document issued by the Department of Civil Registration Services that provides proof that one is a Kenyan by birth and similarly is required by pupils and students applying to sit for their National Examinations. It is also useful when applying for a National Identification Card when one turns 18 and in the application for a Kenyan Passport when in need to travel out of the country.

b. National Identification Card

A National Identification Card is a portable document issued by the Department of National Registration Bureau (NRB) containing an identificaion number, name, picture, date and place of birth, gender and other vital details, that one is required or encouraged to carry as a means of confirming their identity as a Kenyan citizen.

Other necessary documents to have as a Kenyan citizen include:

c. KRA PIN Certificate

A KRA PIN Certificate is a document issued by the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) containing a unique 11-digit personal identification number, which identifies an individual or non-individual for purposes of transacting business with the Authority (KRA), other Government agencies and service providers.

d. Chapter Six (6) Documents

Kenyan citizens are required to fulfil the requirements of the Chapter Six (6) of the Constitution of Kenya 2010 that touches on Leadership and Integrity. The following are compliance and clearance certificates to be obtained according to the said Chapter:

i. Certificate of Good Conduct

The Certificate of Good Conduct, also known as the Police Clearance Certificate (PCC) or Good Conduct Certificate, is a certificate issued by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Kenya confirming the applicant’s criminal record status.

ii. Tax Compliance Certificate

A Tax Compliance Certificate (TCC), otherwise known as KRA Clearance Certificate, is a document issued by the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) that is used to prove the applicant’s tax compliance as provided by the law i.e. paying their taxes and filing tax returns.

iii. HELB Compliance Certificate

A HELB Compliance Certificate is a document issued by the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) to loanees or non-loanees who are up to date with their loan repayment or did not benefit from HELB loan respectively.

iv. EACC Clearance

An EACC Clearance is a document (filled and legally stamped self-declaration form) issued by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to individuals who wish to declare their confidential integrity report - especially corruption report in Government and the public sector - to concerned agencies/panels.

v. CRB Clearance Certificate

A CRB Clearance Certificate is a document issued by the Credit Reference Bureau (CRB) to individual Kenyan citizens indicating their current credit report or creditworthiness.

e. NHIF Card

An NHIF Card is a document issued by the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) to its registered members in Kenya.

Here is how you can register for and obtain your NHIF Card.

f. NSSF Card

An NSSF Card is a document issued by the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) to its registered members in Kenya.

g. Driving License (DL)

A Driving License or Driver’s License is a document issued by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) confirming legal authorization for a specific individual to operate one or more types of motorized vehicles - such as motorcycles, cars, trucks, or buses - on Kenyan public roads.

h. Passport

A Passport is a document issued by the Directorate of Immigration Services to Kenyan citizens who intend to travel abroad.

i. Voters Card

A Voters Card is a document issued by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to individuals who’ve reached the age of eighteen (18) years, which primarily serves as an identity proof for Kenyan citizens while casting their ballot during elections.
